Gas Lines

Smell gas? If you smell gas, do not use switches, phones or flames inside. Leave the home right away, then call your gas utility from outside. Once it is safe, our team can inspect and repair the gas line and appliance.

About gas piping

The first question is always capacity. We add up the gas demand of every appliance in the home and size the new branch so the new appliance gets enough gas without starving the furnace or water heater.

Outdoor lines for barbecues and fire tables need proper protection and a shutoff near the appliance. Indoor lines need support, protection through framing and clear labelling.

Gas piping carries fuel from your meter to every appliance in the home: furnace, water heater, fireplace, range, dryer, pool heater and outdoor barbecue. In Ontario this work must be done by properly certified gas technicians and must be pressure tested before an appliance is connected.

Adding a line for a new range, a patio heater or a pool heater starts with sizing. Each appliance uses a certain amount of gas, and the pipe must be large enough to deliver it at the correct pressure without starving other appliances. Undersized piping is a common reason new appliances perform poorly.

When an appliance is removed, the line feeding it should be shut off and capped properly rather than left open behind a wall or under a counter.

Signs you may need gas piping

  • You are adding a gas appliance
  • You are moving a range or dryer
  • You want a natural gas barbecue instead of propane tanks
  • You are adding a gas range, dryer, barbecue, fire table, heater or pool heater
  • An appliance has been removed and its gas line is open or loosely capped
  • Corroded, damaged or unsupported pipe
  • Old flexible connectors that are kinked or out of date
  • A faint gas odour near fittings, which needs the emergency steps shown on this page
  • Appliances that struggle when several run at once

  5. 5

    Connect and verify

The appliance is connected, lit and checked for correct operation.

Repair or replace?

Short sections of damaged or corroded pipe can usually be replaced without redoing the entire system.

When older piping is undersized for a household that has added several appliances, rerouting or upsizing the main branch is often the cleaner solution.

Outdoor gas line work for barbecues and fire tables is easiest when the ground is not frozen, so spring and summer are the busiest seasons for that kind of project.
