Furnace Not Turning on in North York
When a furnace will not turn on or ignite, the cause is usually power, the thermostat, a safety switch or the ignition system. A step by step diagnosis finds which.
Heating and Cooling
Smell gas? If you smell gas, do not use switches, phones or flames inside. Leave the home right away, then call your gas utility from outside. Once it is safe, our team can inspect and repair the gas line and appliance.

About furnace not turning on
Before calling, check that the thermostat is set to heat, the furnace switch is on, the breaker is not tripped and the filter is not clogged. These simple checks solve a surprising number of no heat calls.
If the inducer runs but nothing lights, the pressure switch, igniter or gas valve is likely involved. If the burner lights and goes out, the flame sensor or venting needs attention.
Furnaces and air conditioners share the same ducts, blower and thermostat, so a problem with one often shows up in the other. A clogged filter can make a furnace overheat in January and freeze an air conditioner coil in July. We look at the whole system rather than one box at a time.
High efficiency furnaces in GTA homes rely on a chain of safety checks before they light: the inducer motor starts, a pressure switch proves venting, the igniter heats, the gas valve opens and a flame sensor confirms the flame. Most no heat calls come down to one link in that chain.
Cooling systems and ductless heat pumps need clean coils, the correct refrigerant charge and clear condensate drains. Ductless units are popular in additions, condos and older homes without ducts, and they need their filters and indoor coils cleaned more often than many owners expect.
Signs you may need furnace not turning on
- The thermostat calls for heat but nothing happens
- The inducer runs but no flame appears
- The burner lights then shuts down
- The furnace runs but blows cold air
- The system will not start at all or the thermostat display is blank
- Short cycling, where the system turns on and off every few minutes
- Water around the furnace or the indoor ductless unit
- Ice on the refrigerant lines or outdoor coil
- Unusual noises such as squealing, banging or grinding

Before you book
Find the model and serial number on the rating plate and take a clear photo. Note when the problem started, what the display or pilot is doing and any sounds or smells. You can attach the photo to the quote form.

How the visit works
- 1
Describe the symptom
Tell us what the system is doing, what the thermostat shows and any codes flashing on the furnace board.
- 2
Inspect safely
We check power, gas and venting before running the equipment.
- 3
Diagnose
We test each stage of operation to find the fault.
- 4
Agree on the plan
You receive the cause, options and price before any work begins.
- 5
Verify comfort
We run the system through full cycles and check temperatures at the vents.
Repair or replace?
Igniters, flame sensors, capacitors, pressure switches and blower motors are common repairs that make sense on most systems under fifteen years old.
Consider replacement when a furnace heat exchanger is cracked, when an older air conditioner needs a compressor, or when repair costs keep climbing on aging equipment. We explain both paths.
Furnaces are best serviced in early fall and air conditioners in spring, before the first heavy use of the season.

Our furnace in Oakville was short cycling. A dirty flame sensor was the cause and they explained it clearly.

AC maintenance at our Whitby home included a full coil clean and a check of the capacitor.
